Do and don'ts about your hair care routine.

B E T T E R U N A T U R A L S

Elevate your hair care to a simple routine, where you use less product and implement natural and healthy hair habits.

Our hair deserves just as much attention as our skin & body. We tend to forget that we don't necessarily need a 10-step routine for our hair. But by investing in the right products, you can create a simple hair care routine and change your hair state drastically.

Here are some do and don'ts of a hair care routine.

Do This

Invest in gentle, natural, & non-toxic haircare products. When looking for hair care products such as shampoos + conditioners; Try staying away from silicones, sulfates, parabens etc. These additives overtime can damage your hair. Investing in products that use natural ingredients, that are in return gentle on your hair, scalp, skin, and overall, the environment.

Not That

Don't overcomplicate your routine with too many products. Investing in quality haircare products don't just stop with shampoo and conditioner. Products that simply leave your hair moisturized throughout the week, such as leave in conditioner, hair oils, etc. It's all about Knowing what works best for your hair and not over doing it.

Do This

Create a consistent wash routine. Whether you wash your hair every other day, every week, or every other week; be consistent. If you constantly are changing your routine, trying different products all at once, it'll be hard to see the results you wish for. Look at how often you wash your hair, if you wash your hair too often, you rid your scalp and hair of its natural oils which can result in dryness, dandruff, over production of oil, and many other hair problems. To keep things easy, set a wash day that works for you.

Not That

Don't continuously pick at your hair every day or change your routine. "Let your hair be." In order to see the results you wish for, limit messing in your hair. Allow your hair to breathe. Give your haircare routine at least three months to see and feel results, but it's important to not set unrealistic expectations, instead create the healthy habit of patience.

Do This

Deep condition your hair once every week. Applying a conditioning hair mask after shampooing has many great benefits to the overall health of your hair. By revitalizing your hair, it brings back the shine of your natural hair, making it smooth, and softer.

A conditioning mask strengthens the hair follicles and prevents hair damage. Consistently applying a deep treatment mask brings much needed moisture deep into your hair strands, while also making your hair easier to style and manage.

Not That

Don't deep condition your hair too often. Deep conditioning your hair can make your hair become limp and too soft. The same thing can happen if you leave a deep treatment mask past the said time. Always apply a deep conditioner once every week for 15-25 min (varies on different products). If your hair by chance does become limp, do apply a protein treatment. Protein treatment usage should only be once a month.

Do This

Oil your hair 2 - 3 times a week. Oiling your scalp and hair daily can help seal in the moisture that is already in the hair. It can nourish and promote hair growth. While also prevent frizz and treat dryness, amongst many other benefits.

Not That

Don't neglect those ends. Scalp care is important but so is keeping the moisture in the ends of your hair. The ends are the driest and oldest parts of the hair. And just like anything else in a hair care routine, don't overdo it! A great quality hair oil is one that isn't heavy. When it comes time to wash your hair again you want everything to wash out completely. A lightweight hair oil with great benefits is the way to go.

Do This

Take your time. Invest your time in how you nourish and take care of your hair from start to finish. Implement a pre-wash routine before your wash routine. The best way to that is applying more than the daily amount of hair oil throughout your hair and let it sit for desired time or overnight, or pre-wash with a regular conditioner or mask. Take that time to gently detangle your hair from ends to roots.

Not That

Wearing your hair in tight hairstyles. It's time to retire the tight buns and ponytails, I myself was guilty of this habit. Tight buns/hairstyles can cause breakage to your hair. By constantly manipulating your hair into buns, is a habit that is the opposite of "letting your hair be". Over time hair retention will be lost and you will see little growth to your hair. Instead loosen your hair ties, wear your hair out or wear protective styles that will last throughout the weeks.

Do This

Protect your hair at night. No matter the hair type, protecting your hair at night will benefit. Avoid sleeping with wet hair, for it can cause damage to the hair and scalp. Your hair is most vulnerable and at its weakest when wet, so it is more prone to breakage, frizz, and dullness. Other ways to protect your hair is with a silk scarf/bonnet. If you don't enjoy things on your head while you sleep, invest in a silk pillowcase.

Not that

Don't use an excessive amount of heat. We've heard this way too many times, but it's true! Heat damage is the hardest thing to come back from, as it changes the shape of your hair. Time to put the heat styling tools down. If you use heat regularly such as diffusing; before drying, try air drying your hair about 70% and lean towards the low or medium heat setting, it can take time but provides great results.
